Welcome to Gene Burgess's motivational speaking website!

  

For years I have asked hundreds of people these questions: 


  1. How long have you worked here? The answers were from, “Today, is my first day” to “33 years.” 
  2. Why did you decide to work here? The responses were usually given after their eyes glared over and a sick feeling enveloped their faces. “Well to be honest, I applied at three (6, 7, or 11) places and this company hired me.
  3. Did you plan on staying that long when you came? Without exception they almost instantly said, “No.”  One gentleman said, “31 years..., no, as a matter of fact I work to buy beer, and I drink the beer to forget my work.” Unfortunately, too many people go through their working career that way. 


Out of the 1,000+ people I have asked the last question, only two replied "Yes". One had grown up in the community and did not want to move away. He made a career decision to stay with that company. The other had worked at the same company for over 33 years. He also had grown up in the community, trusted the company and made his career there.
Unfortunately, if you fast forward this story 20 years, both of those companies have closed.  


My desire is to help you find meaning in life beyond “I applied at 5 places" or “No, I did not plan to stay this long, but I got married had a few children and the bills were coming, and I have not changed jobs.” 


We've got to choose our occupations/dreams/businesses carefully. They should be built on something much greater than, “I applied six places, and I got hired.” 


What can we do to help you have a story where you lived your dreams and not your . . . “they hired me.” story?
